This necklace was made using and cattail harvested as part of an ecological restoration initiative in the Comox Valley (Vancouver Island) and red cedar bark* given to me by my friend and Squamish Nation carver Xwalacktun. This bark belonged to the tree used to carve the Reconciliation Pole (nə́c̓aʔmat ct – ‘we are one’) that is now outside of the Vancouver School Board building.
*I only use cedar bark if it has been given to me (like in this special case), out of respect and appreciation of this material with immense cultural significance to Coast Salish Indigenous groups where I live in the Pacific Northwest.
